Lisbon to Tavira by bus and train

Tavira is a delightful fishing town situated to the east of the Algarve, while Lisbon is the vibrant capital of Portugal, and the location of the main international airport. It is 303km (188miles) from Lisbon to Tavira, and when driving the journey takes around 3 hours.

There is very good public transport connecting Lisbon to Tavira, with regular and inexpensive bus and train services. This article will detail how to travel between Tavira and Lisbon using public transport, and includes details of fares, station information and links to current timetables.

Should I take the train or bus between Tavira and Lisbon?

The bus and train services between Lisbon and Tavira are modern, safe and reliable, and there is not much to recommend one over the other.

The express bus services provide a direct route, whereas the rail journey requires two trains and a connection in the city of Faro. This is a straightforward connection, as Faro station has only three train lines and there is good signage.

Book your seats in advance!

You should always book your tickets (for both train and bus) in advance of the journey. The express train between Lisbon and Faro has to be booked before travelling, as each ticket is designated a seat number, and only a set number of tickets are sold.

The bus routes between Lisbon and Tavira serve the entire eastern Algarve, and are very popular during the summer, so it is advisable to book tickets far in advance.

Lisbon to Tavira by train

There are five daily train services between Tavira and Lisbon, and the latest timetable can be seen on the Comboios de Portugal (CP) website:

A single ticket from Lisbon to Tavira using the Alfa Pendular train costs €31.80/€24.00 (first/second class) or is slightly cheaper with Intercidades, €29.90/€23.10 (first/second class). It should be noted that the express trains stop at Faro, and both fares use the same slow regional train between Tavira and Faro.

Tavira and Lisbon train stations

The connection between the region train and the express train is at Faro station (GPS: 37.019628, -7.941065). Faro is a small train station and is easy to navigate around, also there are usually lots of other passengers making the same connection between trains.

In Lisbon, the express train stop at the Estação do Oriente (GPS: 38.768212, -9.098981), and is a major train station to the northeast of the city. The metro is usually the most convenient method of travel from Oriente station, and is connected to the red metro line, which also provides a direct link to the airport.

Tavira to Lisbon by Bus

There are four bus routes from Tavira to Lisbon, (each with minor route variations) and a total of 12 departures Monday to Friday. A single from Tavira to Lisbon costs €20.00/€21.00 (Rede Expressos/ Eva – for some reason Eva bus cost €1 extra). Insight: The Rede Expressos bus station in Lisbon is called Sete Rios, when navigating the Rede Expressos website choose “Lisboa Sete Rios” as the “to/from” location, as this will provide the most departures.

Lisbon and Tavira Bus Stations

Tavira bus station is surprisingly large considering the few daily departures from here. The bus station (GPS: 37.12714, -7.65261) is only a short walk to the centre of Tavira (200m to the Ponte Romana Bridge). The ticket office is open from 7:30 until 19:00 every day.
